The State of the WWE

The WWE is at an all time high between talent, content, and viewers, and these are great things. I started re-watching the WWE about 2, 3 years ago and I felt like I was 10 years old again. I love everything that the WWE is doing. The WWE couldn’t be better. Actually, I lied. The WWE can be better and I’ll tell you how.

You have wrestlers get called up from NXT who get a huge pop whenever they make their Raw/Smackdown debut, but then soon after, they get over shadowed by all the story lines. Look at Finn Balor for example. Balor was drafted in the 1st round of the brand split by Raw, goes on to become the first WWE Universal Champion, and then gets injured short after. Since he returned, he never really got his title shot at the Universal title or even any title at that. But lets see Reigns vs. Lesnar for the millionth time or any other played out match for a championship. Balor is one of the most talented wrestlers on the roster and has a HUGE following and he is being completely wasted.

Another example on the Raw roster is Sasha Banks. Banks being part of the Four Horse Women (with Bayley, Charolette, and Becky) was a true talent when she got called up from NXT in 2015. She helped elevate the women’s revolution to what it is today. She is a 4 time Raw Women’s Champ, but since she lost the title in 2017 at Summer Slam to Alexa Bliss, she hasn’t been in the championship spotlight in a while. Meanwhile Ronda Rousey comes on the scene and quickly becomes the Raw Women’s Champion.

I’m a huge Ronda Rousey fan and I love that she has the belt, but as a WWE fan I don’t like becomes not only does Sasha Banks have to wait in line now, but so does Bayley, Ember Moon, Natalya, and Ruby Riot. And now that the Bella’s have returned that means they’re going to be in the spotlight for a little bit. Now for Smackdown, what they’ve done to Askua is just terrible. Askua is one of the most talented wrestlers on the roster (male or female) and she is literally being wasted. You build her up so much, undefeated record, retires from NXT, has an amazing match with Charolette at WM 34 (arguably best match of the night) and since then she’s just become a regular on Smackdown. Charolette loses the title to Carmella, so Charolette took a little time off. Which meant, okay here comes Askua to destroy Carmella and win the title, but no, they have Carmella beat Askua twice which in no way should ever happen.Carmella is no where close to being on the same level as Asuka. Since then, she’s been nothing, and now that Charolette won the title again…and her and Becky are feuding, she’ll have to take a back seat to them. The Perfect 10 more like the The Perfect Jobber.

Tye Dillegner made his debut at the Royal Rumble. He received a huge pop when he debuted and was one of the biggest stars om NXT. Now he’s become a jobber and is following R-Truth around. Even Bobby Roode. He was one of the best heels in NXT and a great champion. Then he comes to main roster, wins the US Title, and then that’s it and we barely see him anymore. I want to see heel Bobby Roode. The main rosters has so much talent they literally don’t know what to do with it. Everyone loves when you get the older wrestlers return like Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley, and the rumors that Bautista could return are surfacing, like I like as much as the next guy when they return, but that just means when they return, that means one of the new young wrestlers are taking a backseat.

It’s getting like that with the women, too. Becky won the Smackdown Women’s Title back in 2016 and until now she really hasn’t had an opportunity at the title, which is annoying because Becky is super talented and I love the heel turn by her. And like I said before, the Bella Twins returned which means someone is taking the back seat to them and it’s looking like it’s going to be Sasha, Bayley, and Ember Moon. The only good thing about the women’s division having so much talent is, soon enough the women’s division will have tag titles and they will most likely debut at WWE Evolution. There’s n0 way they have a whole pay-per-view for just 2 title defenses (which haven’t even been announced that the titles are being defended). So, it will be very exciting to see how the women’s division continues to develop. Also, it’s going to be very exciting to see when Shayna Basler gets the call up and her and Ronda hook up. Then the next thing we know Jesseamyn Duke and Marina Shafir get called up and we have The Four Horse Women vs. The Four Horse Women.

When it comes to the main rosters and NXT, people always favor NXT. I didn’t start watching NXT until a couple months ago. My friends would always tell me, the NXT Takeovers are always way better than the pay-per-view. I thought to myself there’s no way that the Takeover is constantly better than the pay-per-view. So, I started watching NXT and past Takeover and was blown away. I’m mad at myself that I didn’t watch sooner.

What makes NXT better than the main rosters is for one, the wrestlers are hungrier. They want it more. The wrestling is just better. It’s that simple. Second, the writing is better. The story lines that come from NXT are just flat out better and just more interesting. For example, the ladder match at NXT Takeover: New Orleans, and the Johnny Gargano/Tommaso Ciampa at NXT Takeover: Chicago, and honestly those were some of the best matches I’ve seen since the Attitude Era. I get that the Takeovers are only 5 matches and that NXT isn’t as publicized as Raw and Smackdown, but that’s no excuse for the “minor league” of the WWE to be better than the main rosters.

Since NXT Takeovers comes every 3 months, the anticipation for these matches is just way better. Third, NXT Takeover are nice and spread out and the NXT shows are only an hour. Since you get such a little taste of NXT, you can hype up the story lines the wrestlers have, and the match becomes more and more anticipating each time. Again, I’ll use the Ciampa, Gargano feud as an example. They built up one of the greatest feuds I’ve seen in a very long time and it’s because they aren’t shoving it down our throats each week and at each pay-per-view. Like how many times do we need to see Reigns vs. Lesnar, or Undertake vs. Triple H, and so on, and so on. It gets annoying, but the main rosters like to drag it out and it stinks. Fourth and final point why NXT is better than the main roster is, Triple H. Triple H runs NXT and he continues to do an amazing job at running it, over viewing the story lines, and even brining in the amazing wrestlers. Triple H is doing one fantastic job.

Overall, the WWE is doing phenomenal, but Vince needs to give the reigns up to Triple H and have him run the main rosters because what he’s doing down with NXT is amazing. The main roster is too crowded with too many good superstars, and the women’s division is doing better than ever.
